THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST HERITAGE OF SUMATRA

- Superior Geographical Area Contributing

Special Organic Nectar Source

The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra is located within the World's three major tropical rainforests. It was listed by UNESCO as the World Natural Heritage and World Heritage List in 2004 and 2011 respectively. Its unique geographical environment and equatorial climate give species excellent growth conditions, and more than a thousand species of plants and animals inhabit there.

The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra is situated on the Equator close to zero degrees latitude. This area enjoys year-round hot weather and abundant rainfall, with annual average temperature of 26 ℃ and annual rainfall of 2,000 millimeters. Seasonal differences are not obvious. The succession rate of biomes is extremely fast. It is a habitat for more than half of the animals and plants on the Earth. More than 1/4 of the modern medicines are extracted from wild plants of tropical rainforest. Therefore, tropical rainforest is also known as the World's Largest Pharmacy.

The unique geographical environment of tropical rainforest gives excellent growth condition to wild plants. Hundreds species of rainforest wild plants with recognized efficacy to human health blooming throughout the year, contributing year-round stable supply of organic nectar sources to Tualang Honey.

Apis Dorsata swarms build giant beehives in disc-shape under trunks of Tualang Trees and collect nectar within the 5 kilometer area surrounding the beehives. It takes around 20 days to get honey mature. The ripening process is 100% natural without influence from human factors. Common honey quality issues like sugar adulterated, sugar or antibiotics feeding, pesticide residue do not happen to Tualang Honey. Food safety is guaranteed.

Studies have proven that Tualang Honey contains more bioactive compounds than other honeys, including flavonoids, phenols, yeasts, enzymes, minerals and amino acids. Special nectar sources create unique taste, fragrance and therapeutic value, making Tualang Honey incomparable to other honeys.

Most farmed honeys are produced from temperate regions close to urban areas, where it is common to have nectar shortage due to seasonal factors.  Some honey farmers are used to feed artificial sugar to the bee swarms so as to maintain their lives. Honey produced by the bees inevitably contains artificial sugars and loses natural nutrients.

APIS DORSATA

- Special Wild Honeybee Species

Like Apis Dorsata, Tualang Tree is also unique to tropical rainforest in Southeast Asia region. Its trunks are strong and often used for luxury furniture. In early years, they were often felled illegally. Nowadays, it is very difficult to find Tualang Tree. In Sumatra, for example, it is estimated about 200 Tualang Trees remain in the tropical rainforest, most of which are located in the deep rainforest area. With the increasing awareness over rainforest protection, local government has classified Tualang Tree as endangered tree species. Illegal logging is prohibited.

Apis Dorsata particularly prefers building natural beehives under the majestic trunks of Tualang Trees. Honey from the beehives are named as Tualang Honey.

One Tualang Tree can have more than 100 beehives hanging under the trunks with width size of 2-3 meters. Each beehive represents an independent colony with more than 30,000 Apis Dorsata living inside.

WILDLY HARVESTING NATURALLY MATURE ON

TUALANG TREE

In Sumatra, all the Tualang Trees are located in the deepest rainforest area. In every harvesting journey, local honey farmers travel long distance from village to the designated Tualang Tree. There is no human activity along the road. In some locations, honey farmers even need to walk few hours after get off from motor bike to reach the designated Tualang Tree. Due to safety concern, honey farmers shall complete harvesting before evening to avoid stay overnight in the rainforest area. Every honey harvesting journey is very challenging.

Honey farmers collect Tualang Honey through the most primitive method. On the majestic trunks of Tualang Tree, they select mature Tualang Honey based on experience. The process does not involve any firework and machine. As Tualang beehives are formed in natural irregular shape, Tualang Honey is extracted from the beehive through direct squeezing by hand. Bee venom, royal jelly, bee pollen and other substances in the beehive are mixed together and contained in Tualang Honey, making Tualang Honey rich in natural nutrients and having a higher therapeutic value than other honeys.

Matured Tualang Honey is rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenols, yeasts, enzymes, minerals and amino acids. These natural substances must be assembled by Apis Dorsata, but not made artificially.

Some honey products selling in the market are labelled as wild honey. In fact, these honeys are most likely farmed honeys. Honey farmers place the artificial beehive boxes in the wild area. But the honey ripening process is influenced by honey farmers. According to market reports, farmed honeys have reported issues of sugar feeding, adulteration, residual antibiotics, pesticides and artificial ripening. These honeys do not have natural therapeutic value and is even harmful to human health. Consumers shall purchase honey products from reputable stores.
